바이오센서는 “측정 대상물로부터 정보를 얻을 때, 생물학적 요소를 이용하거나 또는 생물학적 요소를 모방하여 색, 형광, 전기적 신호 등과 같이 인식 가능한 유용한 신호로 변환시켜주는 시스템”이라고 할 수 있다.
주요 용도분야는 의료용, 환경용, 식품용, 산업용, 군사용, 실험연구용 등이다. 의료용은 현재 가장 많이 이용되고 있는 분야로서 주로 혈당측정용 바이오센서가 시장규모의 대부분을 차지하고 있다.
