Abstract
III. Content and scope of the study
This study reviews the coordination and integration processes of the European
science and technology, and information policies under the umbrella of the
""European Research Area"" of the EU. Then, this study examines the three main
components of the science and technology information infrastructure - 1) content
(research information system and metadata standardization), 2) system
(supercomputing, broadband networking, GRID), and 3) e- Science application
(Bioinformatics, Bio- GRID as case studies). As is seen from the case study of the
bioinformatics, all these components are tightly interacting each other, so this
study focuses on the synergy creation from these components. In the conclusion,
the policy implications are derived, and the opportunities and benefits of the
cooperation with the EU are diagnosed.
