Between2007and2010VirgocollecteddataincoincidencewiththeLIGOand
GEOgravitational-wave(GW)detectors.Thesedatahavebeensearchedfor
GWsemittedbycataclysmicphenomenaintheuniverse,bynon-axisymmetric
rotatingneutronstarsorfromastochasticbackgroundinthefrequencybandof
thedetectors.ThesensitivityofGWsearchesislimitedbynoiseproducedby
thedetectororitsenvironment.Itisthereforecrucialtocharacterizethevarious
noisesourcesinaGWdetector.ThispaperreviewstheVirgodetectornoise
sources,noisepropagation,andconversionmechanismswhichwereidentified
inthethreefirstVirgoobservingruns.Inmanycases,theseinvestigations
allowedustomitigatenoisesourcesinthedetector,ortoselectivelyflagnoise
eventsanddiscardthemfromthedata.Wepresentexamplesfromthejoint
LIGO-GEO-VirgoGWsearchestoshowhowwellnoisetransientsandnarrow
spectrallineshavebeenidentifiedandexcludedfromtheVirgodata.Wealso
discusshowdetectorcharacterizationcanimprovetheastrophysicalreachof
GWsearches.
