Theinfluenceofpyridineadsorptionandthe
appliedelectricfieldonthebandstructureandmetallicityof
zigzaggraphenenanoribbons(ZGNRs)wasinvestigatedby
usingdensityfunctionaltheory(DFT)calculations.The
semiconductingZGNRsbecamehalf-metallicorremained
semiconductingdependingontheconfigurationofN?C
covalentbondsbetweenpyridineandtheoutermostCatomof
theZGNRs.Inaddition,thebandgapoftheandspin
statesoftheZGNRscouldbetunedbynoncovalentbonds.
ThiseffectwasenhancedwhenBF3wasintroduced
simultaneouslyattheoppositeedge.Theappliedexternal
electricfieldalsomodulatedthebandstructuresofthe
ZGNRs,makingthemhalf-metallicorsemiconductingtosomeextent.Thesefeaturessuggestthatthewell-arrangedadsorption
ofpyridineandBF3couldbeusedtotunethebandstructuresofnanoscaleelectronicdevicesbasedongraphene.
