dc.description.abstract
Ligamentsassistmusclesinstabilizingthespinewithinphysiologicalrangesofmotionbylimitingthedisplacements,buttheroleof
ligamentsinspinalloadsandmuscleforcedistributionremainsunknown.Thepurposeofthisstudywastoinvestigatetheeffectof
differentstiffnessonjointresultantforcesandmuscleforcesindifferentflexedpositions.Forthisstudy,fiveligamentstiffnesssets
weredeterminedfromtheliteratureandappliedtoamusculoskeletalspinemodel.Thedimensionsofthemodelwereadjusted
accordingtosubjectsintheinvivoexperimentsusedforvalidation,andspinalloadsandmuscleforcesweredeterminedduringflexed
positions.Thedifferencesbetweenthespinalloadsduetodifferentligamentstiffnesseswereinsignificant(maximumdifference12%).
However,thedifferentligamentstiffnessesshowedastrongeffectonindividualmuscleforces.Amongtheshortmuscles,lumbar
multifidiexertedonly65Nwithoutligamentsbuttheforceincreasedupto254Nduetoaddingthemaximumligamentstiffness.
However,theloadintheerectorspinaewassignificantlydecreased(30%).Theresultsofthisstudyshowedthatinadditiontolong
andsuperficialmuscles,ligamentsalsoplayedanimportantroleinstabilizingthespineinflexedpositions.
