dc.description.abstract
The development of supercomputers is led by major companies such as Cray, HP, Fujistu, etc. and domestic companies are not motivated. Last year the ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning (MSIP) approved "SuperKorea 2020: national super computing infrastructure advancement project" and Korea supercomputer development plan was established through KAIST forum of high performance computing. In order to enhance the domestically development capacity of supercomputer, KISTI have newly established the Supercomputer Development Center in 2016.
We guess that the current petascale-level computing performance will be evolved to the exascale-level around 2020. For this, however, power efficiency should be improved. In particular, while existing server processors were developed with the focus on the maximum performance (Peak clock frequency), the practical system needs to be developed under the limit of power consumption (Power).
Low power consumption processors used for mobile terminals such as smart phones and tablet PCs were basically developed on the premise of Battery use. Therefore, if leveraging low power processor, we are able to get the maximum performance with low power consumption. However, since it is not a situation considering software for HPC (High Performance Computing), research and development of system software and optimization technology for low power processor-based server are necessary.
In this project, we expect to have research experience through continuous research of last year's task and find the starting point for system software research of low energy computing.
