Abstract

I. INTRODUCTION There are many purposes for which technology assessments are performed, and the purpose dictates the process used. The purpose for both types of assessments that we are studying is to determine the commercialization potential for a specified technology. Two examples of other types of assessments are: determining the suitability of a technology for internal use, or determining the impact of a technology on the environment. Note that technology commercialization assessments are used early in the commercialization process. We may be at a stage where there are many ideas about how the technology might be applied, but no specific product or service idea. By contrast, at the stage where venture planning is performed, we already have in mind a specific application of the technology, and our focus changes from the value of the technology to the value of the venture.
