최근 전자 및 컴퓨터 기술의 급속한 발전에 따라 이들 기술과 기계기술을 결합한 로봇 산업이 눈부시게 발전하였다. 이에 따라 관련 산업의 규모도 급속히 증대되고 있으며 향후 21세기를 주도하는 산업의 하나로 발전할 것으로 예상되고 있다.
차세대를 이끌어 갈 산업으로 각광을 받고 있는 IT, BT, NT산업과 함께 RT(Robot Technology) 산업에 대한 선진국 정부의 정책적 지원이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 이에 따라 우리나라 정부에서도 21세기 유망지식기반산업의 하나로 로봇 산업을 선정하여 이를 중점 육성하고 있는 실정이다.
