* LED는 전기신호가 인가되면 빛을 발산하는 화합물 반도체의 일종으
로서, 1960년대 GaAs 화합물 반도체를 이용하여 적색광을 발광하는
LED가 최초로 개발되었으며, 그후 청색 LED와 백색 LED가 개발되
면서 LCD 백라이트의 광원과 조명용 등으로 응용 범위가 더욱 확대
되고 있다.
* LED를 이용한 조명은 높은 효율, 긴수명 등의 장점을 바탕으로 기존
광원들을 대체해 나갈 것으로 예상되며, 현재 일본, 미국 등 선진국은
전략적 차원에서 LED 조명산업을 집중 육성하고 있다. 우리나라도
2015년까지 LED 조명의 비중을 30%까지 보급하는 것을 목표로 LED
조명산업 발전전략을 수립하여 추진하고 있다.
