II. 연구개발의 목적 및 필요성


o 핵융합, 고에너지물리, 생명공학 등 첨단 과학기술분야의 획기적 발전으로 과학기술 강국을 달성하기 위해 대용량 첨단과학기술정보의 국내외 유통성을 획기적으로 높일 수 있는 광 네트워킹 기반 환(ring)형의 10~40기가급 글로벌 과학기술협업연구망이 필요


o 고속의 광 전송을 기반으로 연동된 글로리아드는 10Gbps 이상의 속도(대역폭)로 글로벌 연구망의 인프라로 발전하고 있으며 실시간 대용량 데이터 전송 처리를 필요로 하는 고에너지물리, 기상기후, 천문우주, 핵융합에너지, 의료 등 첨단 과학기술 연구를 위하여 지리적/공간적 제약을 뛰어넘는 첨단・고속의 원격 협업연구가 지속적으로 요구

II. Purpose of Research and Development, and the need


o Increasing needs to global ring network for advanced application development which supports 10 to 40 Gbps bandwidth due to the fast emerging cutting-edge technologies in science and technology (e.g., nuclear fusion, high-energy physics, life science and etc.).


o GLORIAD associating with high-speed optical switching is now evolving to a core in global research networks since real-time applications having properties of massive and bulk data transmission continue to ask for remote collaborative researches regardless of researcher`s physical locations.
